Human
Rights Education in Schools
The Institute of
Human Rights Education has introduced “A National Programme for
Human Rights Education” in schools in the states of Tamil Nadu,
Orissa, Gujarat, Chattisgarh, Kerala, Pondicherry, Karnataka, Andhra
Pradesh, Tripura, Maharashtra,Delhi and West Bengal.
In W.B. we want to impart Human Rights
knowledge and skills to students of the sixth standard in 56 Govt.-aided,
Govt. schools and private schools. Accordingly, we have met Mr. A. S.
Biswas, Director of School Education, who helped us communicate with
the three District Inspectors of Education: North and South 24 Parganas
and Howrah, who have selected 42 schools and 14 private schools in the
city.
To initiate the programme, a State Level
Introductory Seminar cum Headmasters’ Orientation Programme was
held on 18th July 06 to which Mr. Rabilal Maitra, Minister In-charge,
Department of Law & Judiciary, Government of West Bengal, Mr. K.
P. Sinha, Director of Social Welfare, Government of West Bengal, were
Guests of Honour. Also present were Mr. Henri Tiphagne, Executive Director
of People’s Watch Tamil Nadu and Dr. Vasanti Devi, Chairperson
of State Women’s Commission, Tamil Nadu.
The importance of Human Rights Education
to Students was highlighted. A class demonstration was given to show
the methodology of imparting the lessons according to the basic plan
used in the “We are the World”. The 48 headmasters present
expressed their appreciation for the course and pledged their involvement,
promising to send their teachers for training. Consequently, a teachers’
training was held in two batches of 3 days each from 7th to 9th August
2006 and from 21st to 23rd August 2006 with 2 more days planned in November.
These classes have helped motivate and
train them in the skills of teaching the modules and all have returned
full of enthusiasm to try out the lessons which will be adapted for
use in West Bengal.
Update December ‘06 :
The teachers returned in November full
of enthusiasm and reported an intense interest on the part of their
Class VI students. The lessons have now been translated into Bengali
and the books will be printed for distribution in January. We have now
begun work on the Class VII lessons which will be introduced in the
new school year.

Shikshalaya
Prakalpa
Identity card with photograph for every child in Shikshalaya Prakalpa.
We are now working on identity cards
for each child in the Shikshalaya Prakalpa. We have covered almost 95%
of the total centres. These identity cards will provide the following
information about the child : Father / Mother’s name, Date of
birth, the centre which the child is attending, home address, along
with their passport size photo.
As we now have 26,500 children in all
our Shikshalaya Prakalpa Centres, the need for a database for all children
is being met by the creation of 26,500 Identity Cards. This has involved
our Academic Resource Group of Loreto Sealdah in visiting 450 centres
taking the photos – a mammoth task but very useful as we can now
keep track of all the children we have brought into school and hopefully
be able to identify all those who are not yet catered to.
Educational Show
The Mobile Library continues to entertain our Shikshalaya Prakalpa children
with different story books, thereby improving their reading skills.
Beside that we organized an educational show for both enjoyment and
improvement in their English at Loreto Day School, Sealdah. Around 12,500
children from 250 centres attended the show, in batches.
Science Apparatus
Apart from distributing books
in the mobile libraries, we are also issuing Science Apparatus on a
regular basis to centres where children have reached Class III and IV.
Our Library group demonstrates the Science Apparatus to the centres
before distributing it, so that the children can practically experiment
with the apparatus by themselves.
