12. Interaction with the German Students on 17.08.2006

We, the students of class X were requested to come to school on August 17th, 06 to meet with Elis, Tim and Milan, from Germany and to familiarize them with the functioning of our school.

At first we took them on a tour of the senior school and later the Rainbow where we demonstrated the way we teach the children on a first hand basis. We exposed the idea of the bridge course practised with the Rainbows which helps them to reach a class according to their age, e.g. eleven year olds who come in totally illiterate can be made ready for Class V within the year.

After that we sat with them in groups to discuss the other aspects of our school – our various programmes, such as the Hidden Domestic Child Labour, Childline, Rural Outreach and Rainbow were very novel to them and as expected, they had a lot of questions. What amazed them was how the students of our school did not have any difficulty in mixing with children from all walks of life. We also briefed them on the present social conditions of Kolkata and India as a whole.

We spent the day sharing and interacting with the German students about our culture, society and heritage. We also defined our hopes and aspirations and dreams for a beautiful India where every child will go to school and have a childhood of her own.

Altogether, we had a most enjoyable and satisfying day.

A Home Away From Home

A National Seminar was organized at Loreto Sealdah on August 11th and 12th, 2006, to propagate the idea of the Loreto Rainbow Homes – a new concept to make use of all the empty space and facilities in all big day schools from 2 p.m. each day to 8 a.m. next morning which lie idle, to create a home for the girls who live at risk on the streets at night.

A total of 86 Principals from schools across India responded to our invitation and attended the Seminar.

After brief introductions by S. M. Cyril, Principal of Loreto Sealdah and Mr. Ferdinand Van Koolwijk, Chairman of Partnership Foundation, chief sponsors of the Rainbow Homes, a video depicting the life of the Rainbow Home through Kali (a Rainbow child) as well as a Power Point presentation on the ethos and style was shown.

S. M. Cyril’s challenging question – “Why can’t the places we teach in, become safe places for the street children to sleep in?” stirred many questions and hearts.

In his address, His Excellency, the Governor of West Bengal, Shri Gopalkrishna Gandhi, said that the concept of using the school space after school hours to house street children is hope filled with a no-nonsense pragmatism. Time and space management (both big pluses with S. M. Cyril) should be used to help children live a good safe life.

The Seminar moved on to in-depth scrutiny of the Rainbow Home, its philosophy, history, from its humble beginnings with a 4 year old child to its years as a relaxing home for 50 kids, to the arrival of Ferdinand, a Dutch business man, who through his belief in the partnership of business with charity, heralds a new approach to social change.

The Partnership Foundation aims to have 50 homes with 200 children each, which totals 10,000 children by 2018, all replicating the Loreto model – which follows 5 basic policy provisos :

1. A loving attitude to the street child

2. Full service to provide for all needs

3. Ultimate goal must be re-integration of the child into society

4. Sponsorship guaranteed

5. A lean and meaningful reporting system

The Principals went back very thoughtfully to look at their own situation and hopefully to open up a few their schools for these most neglected of all children.

We have had positive replies from Maharashtra, Varanasi, Patna and Kerala.
