Street children return to the streets
not to live, but to share what they have gained, with their“grandparents”.
LORETO SEALDAH has embarked on its latest challenge to care for the old, uncared for, infirm destitute of the city. This field has been neglected for a long time as there is no place for the old and infirm that live on the streets. After the initial groundwork, it was felt that there were no better angels of love other than children. The street children of LDS’s Rainbow programme along with the regular students have joined hands to launch this programme in April 2003. They expressed that they wanted to reach out to their very own old folks who lived on the streets as initially in the days gone by that was from where they came from. This special bonding is innate. A survey was made of Moulali and Sealdah. Very old and really destitute men and women were identified, rapport was made and the seeds for the beginnings of a relationship were sown. The entry points for gaining confidence, love and trust were simple Each afternoon a number of lunch packets are taken to the located spots and given to the old people. They often remained huddled in the same area owing to some physical or mental disability. At present we have 18 “Grandpa’s and Grandma’s” in our Programme. Each day 4 to 5 students take the food, chat, wash, clean and spend time with their lonely “Grandparents”. This unique relationship between the old neglected generation and the young is being strengthened. Our future dream is to have our own “Grandparents” home with a school for the “Grandchildren” right beside it.
